LaShawn Monroe

Co-Owner, The Chateau Lounge

Lashawn Monroe is more than just a business owner—she’s a community builder, creative visionary, and lifelong advocate for culture, inclusion, and opportunity. With a background in workforce development and certified construction training, Lashawn has long been dedicated to helping others grow, both professionally and personally. Her passion for revitalizing spaces and uplifting people naturally led her to one of D.C.’s most iconic venues: The Chateau.

When Lashawn and her business partner Kia Wallace took over the historic nightclub at 3439 Benning Road NE, their goal was clear—to bring new life to a place that had once been the heartbeat of D.C.’s hand dance scene. After several closures and management changes following the passing of original owner Seresa “Nut” Coleman, Lashawn saw an opportunity to not only honor Coleman’s legacy, but to expand the club’s role as a cultural and community hub.

Under Lashawn’s leadership, The Chateau Lounge underwent a major transformation—modernizing the dance floor, upgrading the bar and DJ booth, and creating a space that feels fresh while respecting its roots. But her vision goes beyond music and nightlife. She’s working to turn The Chateau into a full-fledged community resource, with plans for workforce training, senior events, inclusive programming, and partnerships with local organizations like the DC Department of Employment Services.

Lashawn is committed to keeping The Chateau Lounge welcoming and inclusive—offering everything from jazz and R&B shows to LGBTQ+ drag brunches, art exhibits, and daytime dance parties for baby boomers and people with disabilities. “We want to open up different vibes,” she says. “This isn’t just a venue—it’s a space where the community can connect, celebrate, and thrive.”

Co-Owner, The Chateau Lounge

Kia Wallace is a dynamic entrepreneur and community leader with deep roots in Washington, D.C.'s cultural and nightlife scene. She is best known as the co-owner of The Chateau Lounge, a newly revitalized entertainment venue located at 3439 Benning Road NE in Ward 7. Alongside her business partner Lashawn Monroe, Kia reopened the iconic space—formerly known as The Chateau and The Chateau Remix—in April 2024, restoring its legacy as a hub for hand dance, line dancing, and Black cultural expression.

Kia’s connection to The Chateau spans decades. She first began frequenting the venue at age 25 and quickly developed a lifelong passion for the community and culture it represented. Now at 55, Kia has stepped into a leadership role to ensure that the spirit of the original Chateau—founded by the late Seresa “Nut” Coleman in 1967—continues to thrive for future generations.

Under Kia’s stewardship, The Chateau Lounge has been completely remodeled, featuring a spacious wood dance floor, VIP section, elevated DJ booth, and a renewed focus on community artistry and programming. The venue not only upholds cherished traditions like Hand Dance Fridays but also embraces a forward-looking vision that includes jazz and Go-go performances, comedy shows, daytime dance parties for seniors, and inclusive LGBTQ+ events like Shi Queeta-Lee’s famed drag brunches.

Beyond nightlife, Kia is committed to using the venue as a resource for workforce development and community empowerment. She and Lashawn, both certified construction trainers, are actively pursuing partnerships with city agencies and grants to offer job training and daytime programming, continuing the Chateau’s longstanding legacy as a safe, joyful, and enriching space for all.

With a clear love for her community and a visionary approach to cultural preservation, Kia Wallace stands out as an innovative leader reviving one of D.C.’s most beloved Black-owned institutions.
